Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore how trade liberalization affects migration flows. This requires, first and foremost, a review of trade and migration theory indicating the relationship between trade and migration. The starting point is the theory of Heckscher – Ohlin − Samuelson, according to which trade and factor flows are substitutes. As it will be shown, the removal of the assumptions made in this theory, however, leads to different conclusions: the flow of goods and labor are complementary at least in the short term. Similar conclusions arise from the review of existing empirical research and analysis of the evolution of migration from the Member States that joined the EU on 1 May 2004.
