Summary/Abstract: Several tendencies are characteristic of the relations between Ukraine and the North Atlantic Alliance. Firstly, since 1991 they have been dominated by Russia’s shadow and will probably remain so in the future. This means that Ukraine and NATO listen closely to statements made by Russian politicians and intently observe the actions taken by that state. Secondly, the area of cooperation has systematically broadened and the network of institutional ties has become tighter. This was confirmed by the NATO decision to “open the door to Ukraine,” taken in December 2005, thanks to which Ukraine may be invited to start accession negotiations. Thirdly, NATO’s involvement in the systemic transformation of Ukraine has been growing, particularly with regard to its armed forces and with the social and economic consequences of the process taken into account.
