Summary/Abstract: The study analyzes the association between the birth of nations within Middle Europe (Mitteleuropa) and the idea of Slavdom. It emphasizes the fact that nations in Middle Europe (a specific region distinct from the East and the West) defined themselves specifically by means of their languages; the modern nations arose from the realization of the Slavs’ unity which stemmed from the influence of the Russian Empire, or more precisely of the Russian language – the lingua franca of the Slavic world. The unity of the Slavs in their struggle for national existence had ultimately been a reaction to the imperial, political and linguistic domination of the German and Hungarian languages in the Habsburg Monarchy.
