Summary/Abstract: Fragmentation is a process of value chain optimization. In the paper environmental consequences of the fragmentation processes in the global economy are described. Diminishing transport and transaction costs stimulate globalization and fragmentation of value chains. There are environmental effects of fragmentation, when different standards stimulate development of “dirty industries” in countries with less stringent regulations. The paper describes metods of assessment of environmental consequences of fragmentation in the case of global and local pollutants. For global pollutants, application of inverse Leontief matrix gives information about cumulative emissions along the value chain. For local pollutants, when emission data are not available, it is possible to use production data as a proxy for environmental emissions. The results of analysis of the fragmentation processes on the example of global and local pollutants for Poland and some other countries are presented.
