Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to compare and contrast the ancient myth of Iphis and Ianthe included in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and its modern rendition by the contemporary author Ali Smith as part of the Canongate Myth Series project. As the metamorphosis in the classical myth concerns the heroine’s biological sex, the author of the article refers to gender, queer and feminist literary theories in order to explore the many possible meanings hidden in both texts under discussion. The article ends with the tentative conclusion that Ali Smith might have taken advantage of the ancient myth to convey her modern feminist views and perhaps even create a new model of prescriptivism as regards gender categories.
