Longing for the Whole

Summary/Abstract: A Dictionary of Cultural and Critical Theory, the result of collective, international cooperation among prominent representatives of the humanities, still awaits a Polish translation. The Polish humanities have yet to see the publication of an encyclopaedia or dictionary on par conceptually with the ideas found in this American work. This article is an attempt to examine this unique publication from the perspective of the humanistic desire for wholeness and unity, first embodied in the birth of the idea of the encyclopaedia. Another purpose of this article is to present and offer a review of A Dictionary of Cultural and Critical Theory.
