The New Direction of the Child and Family Protection System in Romania

Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the legal and procedural changes that took place within the child and family protection system in Romania during recent years, while focusing on the institutionalization effects on children, on the social context that determined the adoption of the current legislation, and on the favourable factors of the child’s physical and mental development, as well as the contemporary vision on maintaining the child in the biological family. The finding is that in Romania the approach of the social protection specialized services is focused on specific intervention, development and improvement of community support network, prevention of family abandonment and active involvement of professionals.
