Summary/Abstract: Research that covers particular functions of language in rhetoric should lead to acquiring knowledge of the mechanisms of a language. As it comes to the phatic function, it is about the prominent element that is making contact and maintaining recipient's attention. The article defines the issue that concerns in which formal elements (of homilies and sermons) phatic function (phatic communion) is present in preaching. The author of the assignment pointed out the reference to the adversative phrases used by preachers, using different lexical structures and the application of certain structures of the homilies and sermons. Those presented formal procedures allow to establish and keep the attention of the listener, which remains an essential condition for an appropriate transfer of content.
