Summary/Abstract: The Church’s teachings about the mission and the vocation of the family in the Church and in the world have seen a significant development in the recent decades. The present article focuses on the significance of the teachings of Pope Benedict XVI about love as a foundation and source of the vocation to marriage and family. The Pope thoroughly analyses the notions of Eros, Agape, and Philia, which are used to describe the phenomenon of love. At the same time, the Pope highlights that in the Holy Scripture Agape and Philia have a meaning that allows to speak of a vocation to love. In his teaching about love, Benedict XVI relatively often uses the thought of St. Augustine. The contemporary theology of love, marriage and the family uses the concept of communio personarum. The communion of persons is being shaped by the power of grace granted by God along with the vocation to marriage and family. Benedict XVI emphasizes the fact that love „grows” within the human being along with the deepening experience of commimion with God.Due to their love originating in God, married people are able to experience their vocation as a daily realization of the community of love and life. Through bringing forth new life and through the effort of comprehensive upbringing of children, they fulfill their mission within the Church and in the world, in spite of the difficulties and temptations present in contemporary culture.
