Summary/Abstract: In the article, the author asks whether the debate over socialist realism can offer any meaning to today’s culture. The answer to this question is based on the exhibition “Far from Moscow. Gérard Singer and engaged art” (28.04–30.06.2016, National Museum in Szczecin) by Szymon Piotr Kubiak. The author comes to the conclusion that the exhibition shows how this otherwise highly conventional genre allowed several artists to express themselves individually notwithstanding the restrictive means with which they worked. From this perspective, social realism appears as a collection of independent elements that were used by multinational authors far away from Moscow, and used for other than solely ideological purposes.
