Summary/Abstract: The 21st century will certainly witness significant changes in trade environment, which will result in the creation of new frameworks and conditions for the development and functioning of trade. Consequently, the analysis of indicators of retail trade effects at an individual country level is important for estimating the adjustment of the achieved degree of retail trade development to the level of the overall economic development. This information is important both for economic entities in the field of trade and for actors in economic policy. The essential aim of the paper is to study and point to fundamental indicators and potential problems, as well as to show prospects of development in the field of retail and trade in general in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It should also be pointed out that the paper is primarily focused on retail trade. The obtained results point to basic indicators of the retail industry position in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Results of the analysis have confirmed that fact that in Bosnia and Herzegovina, trade and retail sector, same as most economic sectors of this developing country are facing problems. This is indicated by the facts that in all aspects of analysis, starting from the share in GDP, retail turnover, number of employees, and number of outlets in Bosnia and Herzegovina it can be observed that Bosnia and Herzegovina lags behind all the other selected SEE and European countries used in the analysis. The reasons should be sought in trade policy and, generally, in the development policy for our country, as well as in modern processes of globalization and internalization and, in this context, in the questionable readiness of local traders to successfully adjust to these processes.
