Summary/Abstract: The importance of the mentoring relationship to the professional and career development of graduate students has been well documented. Research across academic disciplines suggests that mentoring has professional and personal benefits for both the mentor and the protégé. Yet, all graduate students are not mentored and many academics do not mentor graduate students. In this paper, mentoring is defined and reasons for the lack of mentoring are explored as well as steps that could resolve potential barriers for entoring. A review of recent research on the mentoring relationship for graduate students provides ample evidence of the benefits of mentoring for all involved. Amodel for academic institutions is proposed that delineates responsibilities for the faculty member, the academic department and the graduate student in the mentoring process.
