Summary/Abstract: A case study of a given practice within the higher education system serves here as an illustration of the author’s reflection on interrelations between sociological theory and research practice of critical discourse analysis, conceived as the incorporation of theory into research. The empirical results demonstrate the tendency of bifurcation of symbolic power – its deregulatory and overregulatory manifestations in the discourse of the higher education system in Poland. The empirical evidence contributes to a theoretical reflection on contemporary society. These overlapping deregulatory and overregulatory tendencies also exist at the level of whole society, which is interpreted here as a communication system with a number of subsystems, such as economy, politics, education.
