Summary/Abstract: The rich fund of mediaeval pictorial legends can be seen from several viewpoints. The structuralist approach, stressing fundamental codes of culture instead of detailed description of images, brings a danger of overlooking individuality. Contrarily, traditional art history focuses on precise identification of unique individual styles. The tension between these strategies of interpretation manifests itself in a way how we use concept of topoi to designate similar places of various pictorial legends. The concept is suitable for general description of meanings and connotations of common thematic core in different legends. When interpreting concrete image, the general meanings and connotations should be modified in accordance with the individual character of the composition and its unique historical contexts.
