Summary/Abstract: The sources of musical history of Zips (Spiš) dated from the 16th and 17th centuries represent a heterogeneous culture in terms of style, confession and ethnicity, which flourished in close relationship of the local musicians with other Hungarian and extra-Hungarian (German, Silesian, Transylvanian, Polish, Moravian, Czech etc.) musicians. In the context of the Evangelical a.c. (Lutheran) culture decisive influence on the development of the musical life in Zips was exerted by the respective German Evangelical cantorates, where, Renaissance polyphony in the late 16th century, and Baroque music in the 17th century were performed, both at high European level. Domestic musicians, originated from Zips (like Johann Schimrack) or migrants from Germans, who had settled in the region (like Thomas Gosler) also contributed to this quality. Within the framework of the Catholic musical culture it was the Piarists and later the Jesuits, who came to the forefront in the mid-17th century. New methodological issues of the interpretation of multi-ethnicity, confessional background and heterogeneity of styles of the musical culture of Zips have been disclosed within the context of complex and true approach to the art of this former county of the Hungarian Kingdom, having been an integral part of a broader geographic, historical and cultural space of the eastern part of Central Europe.
