Summary/Abstract: The author proceeds from the principle understanding that the man who creates culture encodes himself in embroidery. Dynamics and essence of this cultural life, as “recorded” in embroidery, are being discussed in several aspects. The first one considers the components of the ornamental system, i.e. the composition of embroidery (vertical and horizontal structuring, its character regarded as “inner frame”) and others. The second one refers to technology of embroidery (the relation between embroidery and tissue expressed by types of stitches, colours and materials, the focus of the person involved). The third aspect takes into account the position of embroidery in the cultural space of man (on his clothes and at home). These parameters of embroidery are determined by the specifics of the particular culture that it is valid for and, therefore, its reading is achieved according to the respective cultural context. The embroidery in traditional culture as well as the changes with the transition to modern times are being analyzed.
