Breaking with tradition through cultural continuity. Gender and generation in a migratory setting

Summary/Abstract: The process of intergenerational transmission is the site of contrasts and negotiations. Within families of Italian origin in the United Kingdom, the gender-specific roles and social control of patriarchal families are enduring, particularly for second and third generation women. Through the years, however, this cultural phenomenon has undergone important transformations. On the surface, tradition is maintained by the appearance of a compliant acceptance of long-dated views. In reality, second generation mothers support their daughters’ wishes of independence. Consequently, long-established roles - fundamental to the cultural survival of the community - continue being displayed so, safeguarding the symbolic continuation of tradition.
