Summary/Abstract: Regional development must be seen as something quite different from the simple location of human activities. It rather includes human activities that are dependent on the resources of the territory. Space can and should be interpreted as a requirement and resource unique for each point of the surface. That is why we need to perceive a broader interpretation of regional development, which includes spatial planning as an important prerequisite for balanced regional development. Problems associated with spatial planning are extremely valuable data resource in determining the goals and priorities of regional policy, planning and management. Both processes – regional development and spatial planning are inextricably linked and mutually determined and should be considered, analyzed and managed as a single system and a process. Several case studies examples of municipalities and cities are analyzed to illustrate and to confirm the discussed thesis.
