Summary/Abstract: This essay examines the meanings of exceptional violence in the case of politi-cized religion, pointing to its gendered and sexual qualities and linking these to the larger institutional project of politicized religion. These meanings suggest that Western theories of sovereignty, and hence the political, that emphasize death must be rethought. The case of Giorgio Agamben’s theory of homo sacer is a case in point.
