Summary/Abstract: Construction techniques used in the Roman world varied depending on several factors such as local preferences, location, the available building materials, the amount of money allocated to the architectural design or purpose of future buildings (Pl. I-II). At Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa we can observe several construction techniques, but at first glance it would seem that the most common way to raise the walls was opus incertum. The question that arises is: how was this possible when in other parts of the Roman Empire this technique seems to be replaced by opus mixtum from the first part of the 1st century A.D.? If we observe more it can be seen that some of the Sarmizegetusa buildings were constructed using the opus mixtum technique, but using mostly local materials such as stone slabs (Pl. III-VI).
