Summary/Abstract: The article provides a survey of stylistically marked vocabulary in the news of three Estonian daily newspapers (Postimees, Õhtuleht, and Eesti Päevaleht). The primary criterion for gathering the material was the author’s subjective choice. In addition, the dictionary Eesti õigekeelsussõnaraamat ÕS 2006 was used; in this dictionary stylistically coloured words and expressions carry the label ARGI, which means ‘informal’. Some words reveal stylistic colouring that is typical of a particular style of text or level of formality. This article focuses on the concept of traditional news and the ways the requirements have been followed in Estonian newspapers. In addition, it explains how the stylistically marked vocabulary used in news is connected with social, economic, and political aspects. All the examples provided have been gathered from the above-mentioned newspapers.
