Summary/Abstract: The study “Trauma Afore and Now: From Charcot to Hollywood” by Jasna Koteska is a historical reading of the complex notion of trauma, from its medical beginnings in the 19th century French neurology and its obsession with the maladies of memory (1880-1900) via Freud’s concept of trauma’s Nachträglichkeit to the contemporary trauma studies. The text examines the differences between the so-called culture of shock (in modernism) and culture of trauma (in postmodernism) to highlight today’s cultural obsession centered around the notion of trauma, a neat intersection of the fragile place between the public and the private, the wound and the spectacle, and the desire and the crime.
