Summary/Abstract: The article discusess the strategies of authors of a smaller nation, smaller literature, related to positioning oneself and one’s works in comparison to the dominant cultural centres. This issue is explored with regard to Polish literature (Adam Mickiewicz, Witold Gombrowicz, Andrzej Stasiuk). The author of the article presents changes in awareness of Polish culture being inferior towards European culture(s) that have undergone from the second half of the 18th cenury until now.
