Summary/Abstract: The design of efficient heuristic optimization algorithms is among the urgent trends in the field of computer science. In this paper, the issues related to the heuristic methods of solving combinatorial optimization problems are considered. Firstly, the main goals of the heuristic algorithms are introduced and the substantial features of these algorithms are discussed. Further, we concern the challenges the heuristic methods face. We also discuss the basic aspects of a methodology for creation of optimization algorithms. Finally, some future directions of the development of innovative heuristic techniques are outlined.
