Summary/Abstract: The growing number of the collections of the Alba Iulia museum (which started functioning in 1887) determined its board to decide – on the 22nd of August 1939 – to issue a bulletin, under the name Apulum, having the declared goal to valorise the field research and the original materials of the museum. We insisted in the present study on the often tiresome and unproductive approaches that Ion Berciu as the director of the museum made to the local authorities (County, Prefect´s Office) in order to obtain the material support needed to achieve the project. After the bidding, to which the “Dacia Traiana” printing house from Sibiu and the “Alba” printing house from Alba Iulia participated, and the first of the two won, numerous delays followed, doubled by the war crisis through which Romania was passing. The printing of the first number was however realised (1942) but by the “Alba” printing house because the first printing house had risen the cost price by 25%. This first number of the now well-known 60 year old annual stands out through good graphics and a remarkable scientific content, suggested even by the enumeration of some of the authors of the published studies: Dumitru Berciu, Constantin Daicoviciu, Al. Borza, Gh. Pavelescu, David Prodan.
