Summary/Abstract: Article shows that reading the short story Kucharz written by Jerzy Liebert including contexts, such as: his correspondence with Bronisława Wajngold, selected aspects of literary of Luigi Pirandello (and his philosophical views) and The Return by Joseph Conrad, shows that Liebert presents in “Kucharz” the problem of searching for identity. Attempts to find identity are connected with the self-analysis of inner life, rejecting artificial schemes of behavior – masks; rejecting the social roles that have been consciously or unconsciously adopted. Recovery of real identity, given from God is connnected with religious renewal and dropping the mask of the sinner.
