Summary/Abstract: USING L1 IN THE CLASSROOM HAS GONE THROUGHT TWO DIFFERENT AND OPPOSSEDPERSPECTIVES. THERE ARE THE VIEWS WHICH SEE THIS APPROACH AS SOMETHING FORBIDEN ASIT DISCOURAGES LEARNERS TO GAIN CONFIDENCE IN THEIR LANGUAGE USE AND IMPEDES THEDEVELOPMENT OF COMMUNICATION SKILLS. ON THE OTHER HAND, THERE ARE THOSE WHOCLAIM THAT L1 IN THE CLASSROOM CAN BRING MOSTLY BENEFITS RATHER THAN DRAWBACKS.THIS PAPER FOCUSES ON BOTH THE ANDVANTAGES AND DISADVATAGES OF THIS METHOD AND ITALSO PROVIDES SOME PRACTICAL EXAMPLES OF SITUATIONS AND CLASS ACTIVITIES WHICH CANLEAD TO A BALANCED CONSIDERATION OF THE TOPIC. THE CONCLUSIONS OF THIS PAPER CAN BEREACHED BY EACH TEACHER INDIVIDUALLY ACCORDING TO THE SITUATIONS HE ENCOUNTERSEVERY DAY IN HIS CLASSES.
