Summary/Abstract: During the interwar period the Pan European movement is one of the most powerful 20th century social actions aimed at unity and cooperation, expected to close distances between peoples and generate "togetherness". It presumed the existence of different political, economic and cultural ground rules, which are still compelling. The movement involved leading European intellectuals from almost every European state. Bulgaria was also represented due to the efforts of its first "European advocate" Prof. Ivan Shishmanov, an influential visionary and activist of the Pan-European movement. The personal views of Ivan Shishmanov, his close cooperation with count Coudenhove- Kalergi and the true recognition of his activities made him one of the leaders of the Pan- European movement. Attending the First Pan-European Congress in Vienna (held in October 1926) Shishmanov defended the concept of common cultural space, cultural reciprocity and equality, decades before these notions became part of the common visions about Europe.
