Summary/Abstract: One of the roles of supreme importance in the history of France was performed by Charles de Gaulle, lawfully summoned as Saviour and Unifier of the nation, in connection with the developments in Algeria. It was exactly Algeria that opened the venue to power for the General - and he did not make fortune waiting for him. Summoned on May 29 by the President Coti, on June 1 he was appointed Prime Minister and vested in the absolute and extraordinary powers to draw up a constitution within a six-month time and the absolute powers to solve the juncture with Algeria. This .French property. was torn apart by .unendurable - problems: clashes between .Arabs. and European French, poor crops, famine, demographic boom without the corresponding increases in life-supporting resources, etc. The General decided to pursue a policy of breaking off with Algeria and Algerian French in order to save himself. By signing the Evian Agreement in hotel “De Parc” on March 18 and 19, 1962 “the lizard broke off its tail” - the bloody path to Evian was walked to the end.
