Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to explore the increasing role of Turkey as an energy hub linking the oil and gas fields to the east of its borders, notably in the Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf and adjacent areas, to European markets. The text is divided into two parts, the first part examining the oil pipeline routes passing through Turkish soil, and the second part focusing on existing and prospective gas pipelines with emphasis on the Nabucco project. The article further provides an analysis of political implications of Turkey’s position as an important transit country in the regional context and a prospective EU member state.
