The overview of selected aspects of speech prosody analysis for the purpose of speech technology

Summary/Abstract: The paper overviews the state-of-the-art literature on speech prosody and on the use of prosodic information in speech technology systems, in particular in automatic speech recognition (ASR). For many years now, the authors of the paper have addressed such research topics as e.g., problems related to prosodic annotation of spontaneous speech (including the issue of the number of levels of phrasing, the role of non-acoustic features in the perception of prosody), acoustic correlates of prosodic prominence and boundaries, specifications of the perceptual description of prosodic structure of spontaneous speech and the consistency of the perceptual annotation of prosody. The article discusses the above-mentioned issues, taking into account the practical experience gained by the authors in numerous research and research-development projects which resulted in the creation of speech recognition and synthesis systems for Polish and computer-assisted pronunciation training for Polish as a foreign language.
