Summary/Abstract: Auditory perceptions which are formed on the basis of acoustic features of real sounds can be used to provide a more precise semantic description of sound names. It is possible, since people experience sounds, denominate them and give the names meanings in accordance with the way they perceive them. There are varying degrees to which the perceptible features are imported into language. Number, duration and structure are observable in almost all the names, while pitch, loudness and tone are distinctive for selected lexemes only. Particular features are revealed in the structure of the onomatopoeic root, word-formation characteristics, semantic tests and lexical field relations. Acoustic methods could assist us in verifying the results of research into sound names’ semantics.
