Summary/Abstract: Taking Marguerite Duras’ book Ecrire as its starting point the text examines the relationships between writing and alcoholism. Duras struggled with alcoholism till the end of her life and spoke about it relatively openly, in spite of the fact that a drinking woman-writer does not hold the same romantic position in literary culture as drinking male writers do. Next the text presents a brief literary autobiography, discussing the experience of time and non-human nature, as well as the evolution of the subjective response to these fundamental issues. In the last part of the text the essay gives way to literary fiction.
