Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the associations between collective memory and city within a new cultural framework – a politics of location and a politics of memory. The author discusses three metaphors representing diverse ways of capturing this relationship: palimpsest, trace, and battleground, and analyses several commemoration practices on which the multicultural past of the town of Szczecin has a bearing; these include prose works of A.D. Liskowacki; K. Freino’s artistic project ‘Ledges & Sandpits’; the city’s promotion strategy and an underground tourist route.
