Post-socialist transformation of Uzbekistan and its impact on the status of women within the family

Summary/Abstract: This paper occupies itself with the development of the position of women in Uzbek family from the Soviet times till present and identifies the changes that occurred in connection with the post-socialist transformation. After a short historical introduction comes an outline of the legislative and religious context of the position of women in the studied period. The crucial part of the paper focuses on the position of women in the family, where attention is paid also to the closely related topics of marriages, divorces and polygyny.
