Summary/Abstract: This paper proposes an approach of occupational and educational intergenerational mobility in Romania, for individuals belonging to the 1955-1966 and 1977-1985 cohorts. This approach primarily involves a comparison between the values and directions of the social mobility of individuals from the aforementioned generations, followed by an attempt to identify the most important determinants of the relative chances of upward social mobility (occupational and educational). Among the most important results of the present research, I have to mention that for both cohorts, the upward occupational and educational mobility is more common than the downward mobility. Also, the occupational mobility (both upward and downward) is more frequent among people from 1977 to 1985 cohort. The ascending educational mobility, however, is more prevalent in 1955-1966 generation. The characteristics that predict greater chances of upward occupational mobility for both cohorts are: the female gender, the belonging to a family with fewer children, a higher level of education and having parents with prestigious occupations. The increase of the chances of upward educational mobility for individuals from the 1955-1966 cohort is influenced by characteristics such as the rural region of residence, the membership in a family with fewer children, the possession of higher education than secondary education and an occupation in non- agricultural domain. For the second cohort, the relative chances of educational mobility increase when the individual lives in an urban area, he has a family with fewer children and his father's employment is in a non-agricultural domain.
