The main manifestations of ethnic identity Galicians

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this thesis is to find out which are the main characteristics of ethnic identity of Galicians in Spain, how they add to differentiating from Spanish majority and what role does the language play in this group's national awareness. The thesis first describes general geographic and demographic facts. The second part contains Galician history, culture and traditions and focuses on celebrations, gastronomy and myths. The next part deals with languages spoken in the region and their use in everyday life. It also includes history and current situation of these languages, mainly Galician. Topics are followed by responds of informants which were obtained via semi-structuralized interviews realized during field research.
