CONCEPTUAL METAPHOR AND LINGUISTIC REALIZATION: THE ROLE OF THE LANGUAGE CONTEXT IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MEANING

Summary/Abstract: The present study continues the author´s previous research on increase / decrease metaphors in Spanish and Romanian business media. The analysis of a corpus made of news reports in each of the two languages lead to the conclusion that metaphor is not a purely conceptual phenomenon. The linguistic context of occurrence of the metaphorical surface realizations also participates in meaning construction. The article includes the analysis of transitive and intransitive verbal structures focusing on the different consequences of their use in terms of meaning. Furthermore, the selection of quantifiers also proves to be relevant in the way the target domain phenomena are presented. In the third section related to results discussion, participial forms are analysed from the point of view of contextual occurrence variation and meaning profiling. The Spanish – Romanian comparative approach highlights the similarities in terms of linguistic occurrence of the metaphorical lexis in question.
