“KWARTALNIK PEDAGOGICZNY” 1956–2006

Summary/Abstract: The first volume of Kwartalnik Pedagogiczny (in English: the Pedagogical Quarterly) was issued in December 1956. It was founded by the Faculty of Education at the University of Warsaw (UW), through the initiative of Professor Bogdan Suchodolski who was the first editor-in-chief of the periodical. In 1970 his post was passed on to an educational historian, Professor Łukasz Kurdybacha and in 1974 to Professor Wincenty Okoń. Under Okoń’s editorial direction, the periodical had the biggest circulation ever – over ten thousand copies. In 1985 Professor Czesław Kupisiewicz was appointed editor-in-chief of Kwartalnik Pedagogiczny and in 1992 he passed the title on to Professor Andrea Folkierska. In the 50-year history of Kwartalnik Pedagogiczny, the Articles have been the most important section of the periodical. Articles usually opened each issue and presented papers written by educationalists, philosophers, men of culture, social activists, and people involved with education. Among them, we can find many Polish educationalists who laid the foundations of the Faculty of Education, UW: Bogdan Nawroczyński, Wincenty Okoń, Bogdan Suchodolski, and Ryszard Wroczyński. Papers were also provided by other academic researchers of the Faculty of Education, UW; representatives of other home and foreign universities as well as research institutes; scholars dealing with different pedagogical subdisciplines (pedeutology, andragogy, history of education, comparative pedagogy, social pedagogy, psychology of education, philosophy of education, aesthetic education), and psychologists. Their articles presented an overview of current research work results. Kwartalnik Pedagogiczny was also open to young adepts – students, Masters of Arts, graduates of pedagogical departments as well as PhD students. Today, apart from Articles, Kwartalnik Pedagogiczny contains the following sections: Colloqia (papers in foreign languages – either English or German), Reports on Research Work, Chronicle, Reviews, and Overview of Foreign Magazines. The periodical has always maintained a high academic standard and is known both at home and abroad. It serves the academic world well – its researchers, students and teachers.
