Summary/Abstract: A model of social support functioning in a stressful situation (Sęk 2003) was used in the study. The model takes into account a structural dimension (source of support) and functional dimension (kind of support). The aim of the research was to find out which of the sources of support (i.e. mother, father or peers) and which of the 4 kinds of support (information, instrumental, evaluating, emotional) was related to family stress. Nine hundred and ten students, aged 16–17, participated in a survey carried out in Warsaw lower secondary schools in 2003. Adolescents received the highest support from mothers, next from peers and the lowest support – from fathers. Emotional support and instrumental support were the highest, whereas information support and evaluating support were much lower. The higher support received, the less frequent family stress. Regression analyses revealed that family stress occurrence is related to all sources of stress and two kinds of support: emotional and information. The results enabled the authors to describe the size of one of the adolescents’ resources, i.e. social support, and confirmed its relation to stress occurrence.
