Summary/Abstract: This article is aimed at analysing the health status and morbidity of the ageing population in Bulgaria over the past few decades, emphasising the developments in the 1990s. In the first section, the dynamics of the ageing of the Bulgarian population are explored – by size of population; mortality, including infant mortality; and fertility by age and place of residence; etc. In the second section, the basic characteristics of the health status and morbidity of the population in Bulgaria are described. In the third section, the new health care system and health reform are discussed in the context of the deterioration in health care services. Thus, the unfavourable influence of all three components may be presented – the ageing population, its deteriorating health status and the limitations of the new health care system. Finally, certain problems are pointed out as they already stand at the forefront of the attention of Bulgarian society and, in perspective, will take up an even higher intensity.
