Summary/Abstract: Orchids are present on almost all continents. In Poland about 60 taxa are known from its territory, for comparison, the orchid flora of Colombia reaches more than 3000 taxa. Within national representatives, 43 species are under strictly protection, and 9 under partial protection. Species of Orchidaceae are in danger of extinction in all regions of the World. The main reasons for that are: destruction of natural habitats, high sensitivity to changing environmental conditions and specific ecological requirements. Noteworthy are modifications of the traditional pollination process. Some of the orchids lure pollinators by imitating the appearance and smell of female wasps, while others pretend to be nectarous species. All of them are important and valuable component of the Polish flora of higher plants.
