Summary/Abstract: At the stage of intensive transition in education and changing educational expectations, needs and social conditioning a naturalist or biology teacher is required to perform effective actions which guarantee expected quality of education and upbringing of a student. The authors of the article raise important questions referring to the above problem. They highlight issues connected with qualifications crucial to perform the role of teacher in the contemporary, continually changing world, teacher competence, social expectations school needs to satisfy, social, cultural and professional requirements for teachers, students’ and parents’ expectations towards teachers. The authors emphasise the importance and draw attention to a vital issue of self-education as an indispensable process in life of a modern teacher and role of a teacher working in the world of continual changes.
