Summary/Abstract: This article follows the persecutions of Christians during the times of Communist and Nazi totalitarian regimes and their canonization as saints by the Eastern Orthodox and the Catholic Churches. The specifics of totalitarian martyrdom is presented in the context of Christian history with focus on the martyrs killed between 1917 and 1984 and the canonizations and beatifications of Slavic martyrs between 1961 and 2000.
