Summary/Abstract: Europe, which has been at the top of the list of the most popular countries visited during the peak season, should guarantee high quality of hotel and tourist services. To provide services at the appropriate level to more and more demanding guests it is necessary to invest capital not only in the proper infrastructure but above all in properly educated staff. The European Union noticing benefits from investing capital in education, has launched Leonardo da Vinci programme which idea was to support vocational schools. The main aim of this paper is to present Leonardo da Vinci programme as a modern form of staff training for the needs of tourist services by identifying knowledge, skills, personal and social competencies acquired by students on internships in European hotels, restaurants and travel agencies. The research was conducted by observation and analysis of available source documents, results of the research included in Polish and English literature have been used as well. The result of this study indicates that European Union Funds influence not only the development of individual but also the whole society. Moreover, these funds are considered as a driving force of the contemporary economy. In this paper conclusions were presented and implications for the future research were formulated.
