Summary/Abstract: Databases and database technology have been around for almost 40 years and reached a high degree of maturity. They have moved in many instances from the "prime stage" to the role of background enabling technology for the implementation of potentially large distributed information systems. With the advent and impregnation of the day-to-day life by the personal computer and the Internet, the perception of this technology in the last 10 to 15 years especially with young people that attend first university courses in data management has drastically changed. Proficient use of Internet-based applications is very often combined with a rather PC (or laptop, or notebook) centered view of the computing world. This, according to the observations of the author, applies especially to first year students in applied informatics. This article describes and discusses some approaches to teach, by practical experience and through small experiments, the still existing issue of performance in large data management applications and to drive home some lessons of its importance
