Summary/Abstract: There is every reason for regarding the French-German connection as the pillar on which the European Community rests. A closer look at this “marriage of convenience”, as the press is wont to call it, is likely to tell us a great deal about the European unification process—the very thing in which the part of Europe subsumed under the term “Eastern” is eager to take part. Examining this model marriage of convenience is also an instructive lesson on the mechanics of diplomatic alliances as such, as well as a key to what members of this type of union can do about their common past.
