The definitional problems of globalization

Summary/Abstract: Specyfika przemian dokonujących się w najszerszej – bo ogólnoświatowej skali – skłania obserwatorów dokonujących się procesów do częstego używania terminu „globalizacja”. Zarówno pobieżna, jak i uważna lektura publikacji analizujących wielowątkowy charakter współczesnych przemian pozwala przekonać się, w jak wielu przypadkach i jak często odmienia się powyższy termin. Powszechne niemal odnoszenie się do tego terminu stworzyło trudność w jednoznacznym jego rozumieniu; co więcej, uniemożliwiło, jak do tej pory, utworzenie ogólnie przyjętej jego definicji. Ostatecznie sytuacja ta doprowadziła do dyskusji i sporów o właściwe rozumienie globalizacji. Różnorodność określeń stwarza okazję do podjęcia próby utworzenia ogólnego – wspólnego dla wielu dyscyplin – określenia. Być może doprowadzi to do zgodności w rozumieniu procesu globalizacji. Wszystkie określenia globalizacji zestawione w powyższym opracowaniu pochodzą z publikacji podejmujących zagadnienia związane w mniejszym lub większym stopniu z procesem globalizacji. W związku z obszernością materiału utworzono kilka grup określeń opisujących globalizację. Każda z nich zawiera zestaw ujęć o podobnych cechach, użytych przez ich autorów w celu wyjaśnienia fenomenu globalizacji. W ten sposób utworzyły się różne grupy rozumienia tego procesu, na przykład związane z przyczyną powstania globalizacji, czy też ze społecznym, kulturowym lub gospodarczym jego wymiarem. The specificity of changes that takes place on the broadest – id est world wide – scale very often encourages the observers of the undergoing process to use the term of “globalization”. Both the superficial and the thorough reading of publications that analyse the multithreaded character of current changes allow us to find out in how many cases and how often the above term is declined. Widespread referring to this term effected in a difficulty to understand it. Moreover, so far it has prevented a generally adopted definition for it to be drawn. Finally, this situation led to discussions and disputes concerning the correct understanding of globalization. The diversity of definitions creates an opportunity to undertake an attempt to create a general definition that will be shared across many disciplines. This may lead to concordance in understanding the process of globalization. All definitions referring to globalization that are used in this work are derived from publications that – to greater or lesser extent – describe topics concerning globalization. Due to the extent of material, a few groups of terms that describe globalization were created. Every of them contains a set of views with similar characteristics used by their authors in order to explain the phenomenon of globalization. This resulted in creation of various groups of understanding of this process. These, for example, refer to the reason for which the globalization occurred or to the social, cultural or economic dimension of it.
