Summary/Abstract: The marketplace is the city's countenance turned inside out, a stage where life goes public. In the largest cities of Europe, the crowded, chaotic, fascinating and deafening market or bazaar, laden with a variety of goods, was turned into the covered market hall in the 19th century hailing the spectacular advances of technical progress.Today, most of these market halls—provided they are still intact—function as shopping malls, department stores and museums etc. In Budapest, however, there is a huge covered market which you'd swear has stepped out of a 19th-century story-book in all its splendor.
