Summary/Abstract: If you ask someone from Budapest what the city is like, he is suddenly embarrassed and lost for words, or else will come up with the strangest of answers. But isn’t this what the essence of a city is: the strange and unexpected things which have different symbolic meanings for different people? When I was a romantic adolescent, I had a dream that if I ever should be asked to show an acquaintance around the city, I would first take him to Illatos út, i.e., "Scented Road". Not that I had ever visited it myself; I was content with the glimpses of it from the bus window as I headed for the Ecseri (a.k.a. the Tangó, the flea market).
